FIRST COVER ARTWORK FOR THE GROUP
December 20, 2021
Brett and Dylan's article exploring the unusual magnetic properties of a square-planar iron-carbene complex was selected as the cover feature for the last 2021 issue of Inorganic Chemistry.
Artwork design by our collaborator Jon Darmon from the Chirik lab at Princeton.
Great work everyone!
WELCOME TO TEAM MILSMANN!
December, 2021
Meet three new additions to the Milsmann lab: first year graduate students Blessing Bamisaye and Gage Jackson, plus 12-week-old Buckee (our youngest member to date).
FLUORESCENT FUN AT THE CHILDREN’S CHEMISTRY SHOW
December 4, 2021
It's that time of the year for the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry annual show, inspired by the Faraday Christmas Lectures.
As part of the 75-minute demo, Carsten showed our young audience the chemistry behind glow sticks.
EXAMINING LUMINESCENCE AT 2021 WVSTA
October 29, 2021
We put together a video for Dr. Spillane and Mr. Tilley to share at the 2021 West Virginia Science Teachers Association Annual Conference.

BRETT'S PAPER PUBLISHED IN ZAAC
June 19, 2021
Strike three! Brett's most recent paper embodies true teamwork. Great synthetic work and leadership by Brett with support from his highly motivated undergraduate mentee Nick. Computational studies by Dylan highlighting the complex electronic structures. Important spectroscopic and crystallographic contributions from Jose and Jordan, respectively.
Lots of thanks also to Dr. Jon Darmon from the Chirik group at Princeton and our in-house WVU collaborators Prof. Jeff Petersen and Prof. Brian Dolinar.

THE CHEMISTRY OF HENNA / MEHNDI
June 12, 2021
It's been two months since we're fully vaccinated! To celebrate life, the chemist ladies from the Milsmann, Dolinar, Jackson and Li labs got together to test the chemistry of henna and learn about its significance in India and Bangladesh.
*Safety disclaimer: The world tested henna on human skin for 5000 years. We are not promoting using your colleagues as test subjects for your chemistry research.
NEW GROUP WEBPAGE LAUNCHES
June 11, 2021
It only took 2 years and a worldwide pandemic, but the new group webpage is finally operational. Let's see how long it will last.
NEW PAPER IN CHEMICAL SCIENCE
June 8, 2021
A new study published in collaboration with the Castellano group at North Carolina State University demonstrates the utility of our zirconium photosensitizers in photon upconversion with record-setting quantum efficiency.
Congrats to Castellano group members Mo Yang and Sara Sheykhi for their great work and to Milsmann Lab alumnus Yu Zhang, who developed these remarkable chromophores as part of his PhD work at WVU.

CARSTEN (VIRTUALLY) IN MARBURG
May 2, 2021
Carsten gave a virtual seminar at his undegraduate Alma Mater, Philipps University Marburg. Great to see some old faces and meet even more new people. Let's hope that travel will be possible again soon. Thank you to Dr. Istemi Kuzu for the invitation.
MINH WINS 3RD PLACE AND PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD IN THE WVU 3 MINUTE THESIS COMPETITION
April 12, 2025
Minh clearly left an impression with the judges but even more so the audience with her presentation "Sustainable Chemistry Under the Sun". Three minutes is not much time for so much science. Fantastic job, Minh!
