FLUORESCENT FUN AT THE CHILDREN’S CHEMISTRY SHOW

It's that time of the year for the C. Eugene Bennett Department of Chemistry annual show, inspired by the Faraday Christmas Lectures.
As part of the 75-minute demo, Carsten showed our young audience the chemistry behind glow sticks.

BRETT'S PAPER PUBLISHED IN ZAAC

Strike three! Brett's most recent paper embodies true teamwork. Great synthetic work and leadership by Brett with support from his highly motivated undergraduate mentee Nick. Computational studies by Dylan highlighting the complex electronic structures. Important spectroscopic and crystallographic contributions from Jose and Jordan, respectively.

Lots of thanks also to Dr. Jon Darmon from the Chirik group at Princeton and our in-house WVU collaborators Prof. Jeff Petersen and Prof. Brian Dolinar.

THE CHEMISTRY OF HENNA / MEHNDI

It's been two months since we're fully vaccinated! To celebrate life, the chemist ladies from the Milsmann, Dolinar, Jackson and Li labs got together to test the chemistry of henna and learn about its significance in India and Bangladesh.

*Safety disclaimer: The world tested henna on human skin for 5000 years. We are not promoting using your colleagues as test subjects for your chemistry research.

NEW PAPER IN CHEMICAL SCIENCE

June 8, 2021

A new study published in collaboration with the Castellano group at North Carolina State University demonstrates the utility of our zirconium photosensitizers in photon upconversion with record-setting quantum efficiency.

Congrats to Castellano group members Mo Yang and Sara Sheykhi for their great work and to Milsmann Lab alumnus Yu Zhang, who developed these remarkable chromophores as part of his PhD work at WVU.

WELCOME, SHENALY!

Shenaly Perera joins the Milsmann Lab as a first year graduate student. Originally from Sri Lanka, Shenaly entered the WVU chemistry graduate program in January 2021. Following her recent marriage and a short honeymoon, she will work on developing new main group chromophores.

Carsten gave a virtual seminar at his undegraduate Alma Mater, Philipps University Marburg. Great to see some old faces and meet even more new people. Let's hope that travel will be possible again soon. Thank you to Dr. Istemi Kuzu for the invitation.

MINH WINS 3RD PLACE AND PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARD IN THE WVU 3 MINUTE THESIS COMPETITION

Minh clearly left an impression with the judges but even more so the audience with her presentation "Sustainable Chemistry Under the Sun". Three minutes is not much time for so much science. Fantastic job, Minh!
